Visual artist, filmmaker and documentary photographer Ilse Frech (1972) of Dutch-Macedonian descent, studied Photography (Royal Academy of Art – The Hague, 1994). Nominated for the ICP Infinity Award (2003). She holds an MA in Fine Arts & Contemporary Artistic Practices, major Visual Arts (HEAD-Genève, University of Art and Design, 2013). L’Institut Néerlandais exhibited “I Am – Paradox Identity” (Paris, 2008), simultaneously presenting her monograph. The Rijksmuseum commissioned Frech for ‘Document Nederland’– “Zjeitu” (2010); a selection of which belongs to its Photography Collection. “Sweet Terror of Memory – ΨΙΘΥΡΟΙ” (15’, 2018) premiered at Netherlands Film Festival 2018 Official Selection of the Short Film Programme and screened internationally at International Film festival Kinenova, Short Film Competition, in Skopje, North-Macedonia. In 2019 the film was selected by the International Film festival Visions du Réel (Nyon, Switzerland) for its online library. “One” A Letter to Eternity, hybrid triptych and film project, is in research phase for development since its conception during her stay as artist-in-residence at Ashkal Alwan, Beirut (2016). Working internationally since 1995, the embodiment of exile related to conflict, genealogical trauma and female identity amongst other, remain focal point throughout her career.
